Center for Language Sciences Brand Identity Design

Project Type

Brand Design

Date

November 2024

Role

Graphic Designer

The Center for Language Sciences (CLS) is an interdisciplinary center supporting research and training in natural language. They bring together faculty and students with interests in spoken and signed languages across departments and programs.

CLS aims to be a center with a standout personality and presence in the field of natural language. Deliverables include a logo suite,  social media visuals, posters, a 100% custom typeface, and more. A central goal to the project included creating consistent branding for talk series and posters as well as creating a social media presence on Instagram and LinkedIn. This brand identity mostly lives in digital form, but there is the potential in the future for t-shirts and other merchandise.

Some of the challenges of this project were avoiding cliche imagery for linguistics and language science (speech bubbles, brains, trees, etc.) as well as maintaining a distinct identity from the University of Rochester, so the center didn't come across as "just another academic department" at the university.
